UFC 206 main event scrached

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier (18-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled title bout against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (22-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) due to an injury. The extent of the injury has not been revealed as of this writing. It’s also worth noting that this is the second time this year that Cormier has been forced to withdraw from a fight due to injuries.

“Rumble” has been on a roll of late, scoring three straight knockouts of Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader, and Glover Teixeira since a loss to Cormier at UFC 187. Those three dominant wins put Johnson in position for this title shot. Cormier scored a submission victory over Johnson at UFC 187 and captured the vacant light heavyweight belt that was left behind when Jon Jones was stripped then suspended for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident in New Mexico.

After a successful defense of the title at UFC 192 in October, Cormier was slated to rematch Jon Jones at UFC 200 but that bout was scrapped due to drug testing issues for Jones. Cormier ended up fighting Anderson Silva in a short notice bout instead.

There is no word yet if Johnson will still compete at UFC 206. That will depend on if any potential opponent is able to step in with two weeks’ notice. UFC 206 is slated to take place in Toronto, Ontario Canada at the Air Canada Centre on December 10.
